I have signed up for “23 Things for Professional Development.” It is a free, self-directed online cpd course for info professionals at any stage in their career. It starts on 20th June and will end in October. All you need is a blog! Here’s a breakdown of the coming weeks:

The Plan

Week 1 (20th June) – Blogging

This blog is about libraries, publishing, information, media and technology.

I am a library assistant in the North of England just starting out in my information career. My background is in design, and I am interested in archives, digitisation, electronic publishing and media libraries.

I’m aiming for a career as a media librarian, digital archivist or subject librarian (that subject being graphic design or periodicals). I’ll be going back to university next year to do a CILIP accredited postgraduate qualification.

I left university with creative skills knowing that I didn’t want to sit at a mac on a full time basis doing mostly corporate work for clients who don’t respect me and what I do. It took me a year after graduating to discover a satisfying and stimulating way to use my skills as a designer and problem solver without having to wrestle with Adobe programmes all day. My technical knowledge is valued and fed and I can dig and analyse to my hearts content. I always enjoyed the research stages of the creative process as much as the development and realisation – I like the hunt and the planning. I like sharing what I’ve found and showing others how I did it. I genuinely love helping people.

I’ve been a library assistant in a public library for three years. I recently started a small post in an academic library which is very exciting. I feel like a pea in a massive soup for there is so much more to learn and I am eager to start running…

I’m not scared of the recession – I’m interested in libraries in the loose sense and am open to working in any sector. It is the ‘information’ in ‘library and information management’ that appeals to me most and the skills of an ‘information professional’ are very transferable.
